Description:

This course provides an overview of the legal and ethical obligation related to supervisor relationships, supervisor's legal and ethical responsibilities towards the clients, employer, and the supervisees. It explains the meaning of"exercise of due diligence" in supervision, due process rights of the supervisees and the proper management of disciplinary issues in supervision. It also discusses the legal doctrine of "vicarious liability" and its implication for supervisors in managing liability risks resulting from the actions of their supervisees.

Objective:

*   Explain and apply the legal doctrine of "Vicarious Liability" and "Direct Liability" to supervision of staff and trainees. (1 hour)

*   Identify and explain what constitute "negligent supervision" (1 hour)

*   Design and develop supervision agreement/contract that meets the legal and professional requirements. (1 hour)

*   Analyze and apply the legal concept of "exercise of due diligence" in the practice of supervision. (1 hour)

*   Identify and analyze interpersonal and professional boundary issues in supervision. (1 hour)

*    Develop and design a supervision practice that is consistent with ethical professional conduct. (1hour)

*   Develop and design approaches in managing legal liability risks in supervising both trainees and staff. (1 hour)

Social Workers, Marriage/Family Therapists, Counselors, Teachers, Educators, Nurses,Physicians, Case Workers, and other Human Service/Health Care/Mental and Behavioral Health Care Professionals, Trainees, and Peers.
