This course provides basic understanding of the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementia's (re-named "Neuro-cognitive Disorders" in DSM-5) and the related cognitive-behavioral problems associated with memory loss, confusion,disorientation, combativeness, and loss of linguistic ability. It highlights the issues of medication misuse and use/abuse of psychoactive substances creating the same or similar symptoms as those associated with different types of Dementia's (neuro-cognitive disorders) in the elderly population.   It provides guidance in making differential diagnosis between drug induced dementia-like symptoms and actual symptoms of dementia.   This course discusses and explain the symptoms of major psychotic disorders and mood disorders and how such disorders can mimic symptoms of dementia.  It offers a methodology in deciphering the complexity of interaction of substance use, medication side effects, other mental disorders with emergence and progression of neuro-cognitive disorders such Alzheimer's disease and articulates treatment approach in management such dual and/or triple disorders.  

*  Identify and compare the symptoms of dementia (re-named "Neuro-cognitive Disorders" inDSM-5 TR) and related cognitive-behavioral problems (1 hour)

*   Analyze and explain the nature and action of various types of psychoactive substance such as psycho stimulants, hallucinogens, central nervous system suppressants and Their Impact on Neuro Cognitive Disorders and Other Mental Disorders. (1hour)

*   Describe and explain the interaction and negative consequences of misuse of commonly prescribed medications on different types of Neuro-Cognitive Disorders. (1hour)

*   Identify and apply the basic principles of making differential diagnosis to distinguish between psycho-active drug/medication induced conditions and different types of dementia. (1 hour)

*   Analyze the reciprocal relationship between health conditions, substance abuse and mental disorders and its impact on the cognitive and psycho-social functioning of clients involved. (1 hour)

*   Explain and analyze the co-morbidity of substance use disorders and mental disorders (1hour)

*   Identify and explain the diagnosing and the treatment approach in working with triple disorder of substance misuse, dementia and other mental disorders. (1 hour)
