Description:

This course outlines the basic orientation and treatment principles of Harm Reduction Therapy (HRT) that has proven good success in the last decade in the treatment of substance abuse and dependence in diverse populations. It highlights the value-neutral, pragmatic, and client-centered approach of HRT in building rapport and developing therapeutic alliance with clients. It provides guidelines in the integration of assessment and treatment planning process in achieving the best outcome.

Objective:
  • Present the overarching perspective of Harm Reduction Therapy (HRT) as a "public health" perspective that holds that health exists on a continuum, as do dangers of ill health and it views drug use and its danger on a continuum as well. (1 hour)
  • Discuss and analyze how HRT avoids a moralistic perspective and focuses on differential strategies in working with different levels of harms to varying degrees of drug use in their psycho-social contexts.(1 hour)
  • Discuss and present how HRT respects autonomy and self-determination of clients and solicit clients' collaboration in formulation and collaboration in treatment goal development and implementation of treatment strategies. (1 hour)
  • Present and analyze the continuum of drug use from non-use (abstinence), use, abuse, addiction, to persistent addiction and how the continuum of drug use is NOT an inevitable progression. (1 hour)
  • Develop skills and strategies in helping clients to understand and to analyze the cost and benefits resulting from their current level of drug use and in this manner, assisting them to make informed decisions regarding their level of drug use. (1 hour)
  • Present and analyze stages of change in harm reduction of drug use behavior and approaches in working with them. (1 hour)
  • Develop and apply strategies such as "Functional Analysis" and "Decision Balance" to assist client to manage the psychological,social, and environmental factors that impinge on the treatment progress of their substance use issues/problems. (1 hour)

Social Workers, Marriage/Family Therapists, Counselors, Teachers, Educators, Nurses,Physicians, Case Workers, and other Human Service/Health Care/Mental and Behavioral Health Care Professionals, Trainees, and Peers.
