Description:

This training program provides an outline of the developmental and clinical issues related to gay, lesbian. bisexual and transgender populations. It offers some insights regarding differences between gender identity and sexual orientation. It discusses the impact of adverse societal reactions such as transphobia and homophobia on the self-esteem of LGBT clients and their intimate relationships. It also provides some guidelines in developing an empathetic and effective clinical approach in working with these clients and their families/loved ones.It highlights the salient issues in transgender populations and the psychological/physiological impact of gender transition.

Objective:
  1.  Develop insights into the developmental and clinical issues related to gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)clients.
  2.   Identify the myths and reality of variance of gender identity and sexual orientation
  3.   Develop skills in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender affirming counseling, psychotherapy, and social work practice.
  4.    Identify transference and counter-transference issues in working with LGBT clients
  5.    Describe the salient issues in gender transitioning and working with transgender clients
  6.    Discuss supportive and empathetic approaches in working with families and loved ones of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clients.
  7.   Analyze the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the LGBT client populations
Intended Audience:

Social workers, case managers, and other mental health, behavioral health professionals, substance abuse counselors, other healthcare professionals and educators.
