Description:

This course provides an overview of common mental disorders with onset in adolescence and early adulthood and their treatment options.  It outlines the methodology in the assessment of such disorders in this population. It emphasizes the importance of making the proper differential diagnosis in the development of appropriate case management plan and intervention strategies. It highlights how many psychiatric disorders can be misdiagnosed or misunderstood as Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder or behavioral/disciplinary problems leading to erroneous treatment.   It discusses the impact of alcohol use and substance abuse on the mental health of youths and adolescents.

It highlights the roles of the family members and case managers in working with physicians,psychiatrists, teachers, other family members and providers of psycho-therapeutic and human services in managing these mental disorders in adolescents and youths.

Objective:

·    Identify the symptoms and presentations of Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD).  

·    Analyze the unique symptom presentations, course of illness of Mood Disorders such as Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder in Youths and Adolescents

·    Describe and identify the onset of schizophrenia in adolescence and early adulthood and how it impacts on the psycho-social development of such clients and their families.

·    Identify and describe treatment options/long term care issues in managing symptoms of ADHD

·    Identify and describe how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder manifest itself in adolescence and early adulthood.

·    Discuss and present procedure in making differential diagnosis between mood disorders,onset of schizophrenia, ADHD and conduct disorder in youths and adolescents.

·    Describe and analyze the medication misuse and psycho-active substance misuse and abuse in the youth and adolescent population and how they impact on their mental health and mental disorders.

Intended Audience:

Social workers, case managers, and other mental health, behavioral health professionals, substance abuse counselors, other healthcare professionals and educators.

Training is presented via Zoom. If this platform changes you will be notified by the training coordinator. Seven (7) CEU credits are available with full day attendance and completion of course evaluation.
