Classroom Course » Behavioral Management of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Neuro-Cognitive Disorders

This course provides the basic understanding of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, other dementia (renamed “Neuro-cognitive Disorders” in DSM-5) and related cognitive behavioral problems associated with memory loss, confusion, disorientation, combativeness and loss of linguistic ability. It provides service providers and care givers of people with dementia or clients with significant cognitive deficits with practical strategies in managing difficulty behaviors and their dementia related psychotic symptoms. This includes behaviors such as hallucinations and delusions on the day-to-day basis with compassion and effectiveness. This training can benefit service providers, family members and/or care givers by attending.  

1. Identify the symptoms of dementia (renamed “Neuro-cognitive Disorders” in DSM-5) and related cognitive behavioral problems associated with memory loss.
2. Analyze the behavioral symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and their relationship to Alzheimer’s disease. 
3. Identify and describe behavioral strategies in managing symptoms of confusion and disorientation associated with Alzheimer’s and other dementia's. 
4. Identify and describe behavioral strategies in managing symptoms of loss in linguistic ability, memory deficits and loss associated with Alzheimer’s and other dementia's. 
5. Develop approaches and protocols in managing irritability and mood instability associated with Alzheimer’s dementia.
6. Develop approaches and protocols in managing hallucinations and paranoid delusions associated with Alzheimer’s dementia.
7. Describe and develop self-care strategies for care providers, family members, and/or loved ones of individuals with different stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia's. 

Psychologists, social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, nursing home workers, nurses and other health care professionals, in-home support services providers, residential care facility staff and volunteers, families and loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia's.
