This training program provides an outline of the clinical, cognitive and behavioral profiles of three challenging but often misunderstood types of personality disorders.It offers some insights regarding the identification of such disorders and how to formulate treatment approaches and behavioral intervention strategies in working with them. It also provides some guidelines in managing the destructive and self-destructive behaviors of clients with such disorders.This course involves a combination of lectures and small group discussions and analysis of case vignettes.

Objective:

  1. Analyze and summarize the symptom presentations, cognitive and behavioral pattern of Anti-Social Personality Disorder
  2. Analyze and summarize the symptom presentations, cognitive and behavioral pattern of Paranoid Personality Disorder.
  3. Analyze and summarize the symptom presentations, cognitive and behavioral pattern of Dependent Personality Disorder.
  4. Identify common errors in diagnosing these personality disorders.
  5. Identify co-morbid symptoms and disorders such as substance use/abuse, mood disorders associated with these personality disorders
  6. Develop and apply strategies in containing and managing self-destructive and maladaptive behaviors.
  7. Design and Discuss treatment options and approaches in working with clients with these personality disorders.

Intended Audience:

Social workers, marriage/family therapists, nurses, physicians, case workers, psychologists and other human services/health care/mental and behavioral health care professionals and trainees.
