Description:
This is an experiential and interactive skills-based training that will introduce participants to basic cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) skills. Attendees will become familiar with basic theoretical concepts and practical applications of  CBT  used to treat a variety of mood and anxiety disorders. The training will begin with an overview of CBT, an introduction to the evidence-base and continue with an introduction to  techniques including ABC case conceptualization, cognitive restructuring,  behavioral activation and treatment planning over the course of the four days.  We will use role-play, demonstrations and small group exercises to situate the techniques within the context of a collaborative therapeutic relationship.
 
This is intended as an introductory course and will not certify participants to use CBT with clients.

Goals for the training:

Day 1: Introduction to CBT, overview of treatment, case conceptualization
Day 2: Structure of the session, introduction to cognitive techniques
Day 3: Introduction to behavioral techniques
Day 4: Integration of cognitive and behavioral techniques

Objective:
Day 1:
  • Describe basic Cognitive Behavioral theory.
  • Describe the basic components of the Cognitive Behavioral model – the role of thoughts, behaviors, emotions and physiology as applied to the cognitive behavioral model.
  • Describe the key ideas of cognitive behavioral formulation.
  • Discuss the components of a good therapeutic relationship with CBT.
  • Apply the ABC model of Cognitive Behavioral Theory using examples from participants.
  • Demonstrate using the ABC model in dyads and small groups.
Day 2:
  • Demonstrate methods useful for providing psychoeducation about the ABC model to clients.
  • Apply techniques to elicit automatic thoughts.
  • Describe patterns of unhelpful thinking.
  • Demonstrate eliciting automatic thoughts.
Day 3:
  • Explain the rationale for behavioral strategies.
  • Discuss the applicability of behavioral activation.
  • Explain the need to monitor activity.
  • Demonstrate using the activity schedule to monitor and schedule activities.
Day 4:
  • Describe one way of evaluating unhelpful thoughts.
  • Explain putting it together - ABC, unhelpful thinking patterns and evaluating automatic thoughts.
  • Demonstrate using cognitive and behavioral strategies with case examples.

Intended Audience:
This is an introductory course appropriate for case managers, clinicians, peer providers, or other mental health staff with limited or no Cognitive Behavioral Therapy experience.

This course is not intended for Felton Institute's PREP Staff.  PREP staff will be offered a PREP specific introduction to CBT.
