Description:
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered guided method of communicating. It is a valuable skill to have in the provider's toolkit because it encourages clients to move through the ambivalence they feel in order to make the changes they choose. The workshop is designed to help providers use the four fundamental processes of Motivational Interviewing (engage, focus, evoke, plan) when working with clients.

This evidenced-based method supports providers to:
  • shift away from the need to fix others, a sure road to burnout.
  • embrace the premise that the wisdom is within each person to change in the ways that best serve them.
  • practice a deeply respectful way of communicating with clients.
  • take the burden to change off the provider, back onto the client, where it rightfully belongs.
When clients are able to own their choices, they are invested in change and are more likely to follow through with a plan of care.

MI is a profoundly remarkable tool that appears deceptively simple to learn, yet like any musical instrument or other hobby, it requires practice and support to develop the skill. This course will provide the space for providers to develop this skill.
Objective:
Day 1:
  • Describe the key principles and the "spirit" of MI.
  • List the primary ingredients and demonstrate a communication style that is warm and compassionate, producing partnership and empathy.
  • Describe O.A.R.S. that are used to safely support and explore client experiences, concerns, values, and motivations.
  • Observe and debrief videotape and demonstration examples of MI.

Day 2:
  • Utilize O.A.R.S. and discuss the "spirit" of MI.
  • Demonstrate and practice simple & complex ‘R'eflections from client statements.
  • Create ‘A'ffirmations from an audio recording.
  • Differentiate and create an MI ‘S'ummary from a transcript.
  • Demonstrate in an MI interview the ability to increase the ratio of Reflections to Questions.

Day 3:
  • Identify the characteristics of ratings low to high of Empathy with coding.
  • Differentiate 3 styles of communication: directing, following, and guiding, to determine what leads to collaborative, accepting and nonjudgmental focus.
  • Describe and list at least 2 possible focal points from a MI transcript.
  • Observe a video clip, describe and apply Agenda-Mapping for focusing.
Day 4:
  • Demonstrate techniques for responding to "Discord" &  "Sustain Talk" with Reflections.
  • Identify change talk statements.
  • Observe and discuss video segments implementing O.A.R.S.
  • Self-record an MI interview which demonstrates a goal ratio of 1.5:1 between Reflections: Questions.

Participants who continue into MI Coaching Circles will have an opportunity to record interactions for the purpose of receiving personalized and individual evaluation and feedback, designed to assist the skill acquisition and development process, and create a pathway toward participant proficiency in MI. Within the Coaching Circles, participants will meet in small groups and practice exercises designed to address specific, identified skill needs observed within their recorded interactions.  Registration and fee for coaching circle participation is in addition to this course.
